The Railway Minister said that the operating ratio of the Railways in the financial year 2024-25 was 98.22 percent. This means that the Railways is now able to control its expenses better. During this period, the total traffic income of the Railways crossed ₹265,000 crore and recorded a surplus of about ₹2,660 crore. This situation is significantly different from a decade ago, when the Railways was struggling to meet even its expenses.
Over 5 lakh jobs created in last 10 years
The Railway Minister informed the House that between 2014 and 2024, around 5.04 lakh youth were provided jobs in the Railways. This includes various posts like track maintenance, loco pilots, technicians, clerks, engineers and Group D. These figures show that the Railways is one of the largest employers in the country.
Preparations for 1.5 lakh new recruitment in the third term
The process of creating 1.5 lakh more jobs in the Railways is underway in the third term of the Modi government. According to the Minister, the examination and selection process for many recruitments has been completed, while notifications for many posts will be issued soon. This is considered a big opportunity for the youth, especially those preparing for government jobs.
Cost control paves the way for jobs
The Railways has also paid special attention to reducing costs. Energy cost has been saved by about ₹5,500 crore. Expenditure on diesel and electricity has come down compared to four years ago. Improved maintenance and use of modern technology have reduced costs, paving the way for new projects and recruitment.
Recruitment process and student facilities
The Railways has completed the recruitment process for 18,000 Assistant Pilot posts and appointments have begun. The Railways has also set up a special “war room” to address student grievances during exams, ensuring prompt resolution of issues related to exam centres and selection process.
Regional projects to boost employment
The railway budget for the North Eastern states has been increased to ₹11,486 crore. This will enable construction of new lines, stations and projects, which will provide employment to local youth. New railway projects in states like Punjab, Kerala, Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir are expected to boost employment opportunities in the future.
